Abstract

Billiards, teaching-appliances for.-A billiard appliance for determining and displaying the angles of departure which the object and cue balls should take after contact, and for ascertaining the point at which the cue ball should be aimed, comprises a pair of corner-pieces c, Fig. 1, for bridging the pockets, and a pair of tapes l, m. The corner-pieces c carry adjustable tape holders h, Fig. 4, clamped by means of nuts g, and the ends of the tapes are attached to vertical pins j. Holes in the tapes are marked by fractions indicating the degree of contact between the balls on impact. In using the appliance, the tapes are stretched from the corner-pieces so that the holes representing the desired degree of contact coincide. The point of coincidence is then marked with chalk on the table, and this gives the position of the object ball, the tapes giving the angles after impact. The aiming point of the cue ball is given by a hole situated at a distance of 2<1>16 in. from the coincident holes. For positions represented by the 1/8 and 1/4 contact holes, the cue ball does not travel to the pocket as indicated in Fig. 1, but to the centre of the top cushion. The backs of the tapes are marked with a scale of feet &c. for use in marking or repeating any desired position of the balls on the table. Specification 6569/09 is referred to.
