Transmitting systems.-The telegraph or telephone transmitter 20 is included in circuit with a variable inductance 12, which is adjusted so that the lag in the current caused by it balances the lead in the current caused by the electro-static capacity of the line 23, 24. The inductance may be shunted by a variable condenser 17 and resistance 18. The lead 24 may be replaced by an earth return and condensers may be inserted in the line at the transmitting and receiving stations. ' The coil 12 is constructed with the least possible amount of iron in the core and the smallest number of turns possible to give impulses of the required strength.
