17,079. Quentell, W. P. July 18. Adding - apparatus with operating - means; multiplying by repetition; totalizing-counters. -Relates to style or finger set multiple-bank independently-operated machines in which a slight displacement of the setting-plate by the style results in a release of the differential actuating-segment retaining means ; the segment is then moved upwards by a spring until it strikes the style and is at once locked to the setting-plate in this position, actuation of the totalizer occurring upon displacement of the setting-plate and segment to restore the segment to its normal position, after which the setting- plate is separately returned. The setting-plates 57, Figs. 2 and 6, have apertures 61 for insertion of the style and are uniformly spaced on the shaft 55; slight downward movement of any plate rocks, by means of a pin 106, a retaining- lever 105, 104 in order to free the corresponding actuating-segment 64, which is thereupon compelled by a spring 75 to move clockwise, Fig. 2, together with the type-sector 68 carried thereby, until a detent 73, Fig. 6, for a spring latch 72 carried by the segment is displaced by the style and allows the point 72<a> of the latch to enter the proper recess of the setting-plate. Upon stationary spacers (not shown) mounted on the central spindle are latches 79<a> engaging end slots in the setting-plates, of length sufficient to permit the slight displacement necessary to release the actuating-segment retaining levers. An item having been set, an operating-handle is pulled down, and a pawl 31, Fig. 1, upon a main operating-frame 21, 25, 26 rocks a bail 90 to throw the totalizer frame 83 up for engagement with the actuating-segments, the position being maintained by a lock 99. Simultaneously, a bail 40 upon the main frame passes from under spring arms 165, which thereupon raise the latches 79<a>, and the same bail strikes springs 69 upon the actuating-segments and thereby restores the segments from which the setting- plates are released for spring-return by the action of cams 113<a>, which may be displaced by a key-lever 110 when it is required to repeat an item without resetting. Upon the return or upward stroke of the handle, the totalizer is disengaged by the interaction of the pawl 31 with the lock - arm 99, the totalizer - wheels becoming locked by a bar 93, and finally the lever arms 165 are forced up to relock the setting-plates. Fig. 9 shows a modified setting- plate 60 and detent 73 for setting by the operator's finger. In other forms, straight setting- plates and toothed actuating - members with rectilinear movement are employed. Printing totals.-By pulling down a totalprinting handle (not shown), a frame 41, 47 is rocked so as immediately to engage the totalizer by co-operation of a pawl 49 with the bail 90, all transfer parts are carried to normal, and a pin 54 engages an arm 108 to release all the setting-plate retaining levers 104, 105 and thus allow the actuating-segments to move upwards under the influence of their springs until arrested by contact of the transfer pins 183 with the rear edges of the transfer pawls 95. Further movement of the total-printing handle effects an impression, and upon the return stroke, a pawl 48 causes disengagement of the totalizer.
