Abstract
16996. Boothby, F. L. M. July 17. Aerostats.-An airship is provided with a series of gas bags A - - F connected by passages having normally open valves V to a common pipe X provided with a relief valve Y so that gas may be transferred from one bag or set of bags to the others without loss by varying the air pressure in the surrounding envelope. In the example shown, the space enclosed bv the outer envelope P is divided by a partition R, each half having a relief valve K which can be opened by hand. This space is supplied with air by a blower through ducts S so that by opening one or other of the valves K, gas may be driven from the gas bags in one section of the airship to those in the other to alter the trim. By manipulating the valves V, the gas from any bag can be transferred to the others to enable it to be repaired or replaced. A modification is described in which separate airbags alternate with the gas-bags within a non-gastight envelope, the air bags being connected by ducts having normally open valves to a common supply pipe fitted with a relief valve. The discharge from the gas relief valve Y may be led through a tube to a point clear of the motors or gun fire,.
