Abstract

Glucose. - Starch, farina, or the like is converted into dextrin, or by longer treatment into glucose, by delivering the starch in a spray or shower into a container into which the acid or the like is sprayed, and simultaneously or subsesequently heating the mixture. The apparatus shown comprises a hopper e into which the starch is fed, a compressed air jet d, a pipe c provided with a heating jacket g, a scattering wheel h, an inlet f for the acid, and a mixing chamber a with an outlet b delivering into a drum i, The whole mixture may be heated in the pipe c or the acid pipe f may be arranged as shown in dotted lines, the acid being separately heated or used cold. Or the starch may be fed through a vibrating sieve or shoot, the acid being sprayed on to it as it falls. The mixture in the drums i is finally heated by placing the drums in a steam heated oven. The liquid used is preferably hydrochloric acid, but other substances may be used, for instance zinc or magnesium chloride solutions. The compressed air or the acid or both may be at such a temperature as to complete the conversion in one stage. According to the Provisional Specification, the acid may be supplied under pressure in the form of a jet serving to disperse the starch, or any other means may be employed for bringing the starch and acid into contact in a finely-divided state.
