Abstract

15,185. Bergasse, P. H. June 24. Fixed-abutment type; working-fluid supply; packing vanes.-Relates to a rotary internalcombustion engine in which two independent charges of fuel are successively induced and compressed in order to provide a single explosive charge. One form of the engine comprises three cylinders 2, 2<a>, 2<b> having their piston drums 4 mounted on a common shaft 6 and co-operating with a common compression chamber 29. Each drum 4 carries an outwardly-sliding vane 5 comprising a number of plates 10, which are pressed outwards by the springs 12, 14 and have packing 16 and interspaces 11 for lubricating passages. Each cylinder is provided with two distributing-valves 20, 21 which are driven at one-third the speed of the engine shaft, and connect at the proper times the inlet and outlet passages 26, 27 of the cylinder with the suction and exhaust passages 25, 32. The engine cycle is completed in three revolutions of the piston; the first revolution induces a charge on one side of the vane and discharges exhaust gases on the other side, the second revolution induces a second charge and compresses the first charge into the chamber 29 through a port 20<a> in the valve 20, and in the third revolution a compressed charge from the chamber 29 is admitted to the cylinder by a port 21<a> in the valve 21 and fired by a plug 33, while the second induced charge is compressed on the other side of the vane into the chamber 29. The piston vanes in the three cylinders are arranged at angles with one another and co-operate with the common compression chamber 29. A chain-driven rotary pump 34 delivers lubricant through pipes 37, 38 to the journals 39 and the drum cavities 9, which feed the vane interspaces 11. Specification 19,252/13 is referred to.
