Stencils.-In preparing stencils by impression with a stylo or type on waxed paper or metal foil laid over a roughened plate as in the Zuccato method, the roughened plate is constituted by a wire fabric, and is employed in conjunction with a rigid transparent backing, provision being made for preventing relative movement of the fabric and backing. As shown, a transparent backing l, with the design n to be produced in the stencil and a rigid transparent supporting-plate m below, is supported on a frame a open below to direct or reflect a light, and the stencil sheet and the wire fabric f are extended over the backing l and clamped between frames d, i supported on a frame c resting on projections b of the frame a. The frame i is held down by lips e on a frame h secured by catches j. In modifications, the wire fabric may be secured or fitted in a frame recessed to receive the backing or provided with stops or pins to position it relatively to the backing, and the stencil may be mounted in a hinged frame, so that after making the stencil and removing the wire fabric, the apparatus may be used for stencilling. The apparatus may be arranged so as to be adjustable to various angles and may be fitted with cooling-means when employed with artificial light.
