[Cognate Application 22,224/14.] Density separators; casings; driving. - The separating-cylinder 10 is of comparatively great height and small diameter, and is mounted on a shaft 8 having bearings 7, 22 in the outer casing 4. The shaft is driven by a flexible coupling 23 from a belt-driven shaft 24. The casing 4 is suspended in a spherical bearing 3<1> in the top plate 3, and its oscillations are restrained by three elastic check bands 26 connecting it with the supporting-pillars 2. The liquid to be treated is fed into the outer casing 4 by a funnel 12, and enters the drum at the open bottom, which may have screw blades 11 to assist the flow. The heavier constituents are deposited on the wall 10, which may be roughened, and the clear liquid escapes at 18 into a receiver 17 discharging into a pipe 19. The receiver is removable. The separation obtained depends on the height of liquid in the casing 4, and in order to facilitate regulation of the feed to secure efficient separation, a gauge glass 14 is fitted to the casing 4. The casing is also fitted with a cleaning-door 15, lids 6, and a draw-off tan 16. A stuffing-box 20 prevents leakage, and a disk 21 throws liquid off the bearings 22. The apparatus may be used for separating liquids or viscous bodies, or for extracting solids in suspension, or for effecting the deposition of substances in colloidal condition from liquids containing them.
