Cementation.-Metal plates having layers of different compositions are made by mounting a plate to form the hearth of a combustion furnace, melting the upper layer of the plate, and adding thereto substances to be combined therewith. In the arrangement shown, the plate a to be treated is arranged to form the hearthplate of reverberatory furnace d and the upper surface of the plate is heated so as to be melted to any desired depth. The desired materials, such as metals or alloys, are introduced through a door e, and an upper layer is thereby formed which has the required properties on cooling. The process may be repeated so as to form a number of different layers in one plate.
