Abstract

11,224. Alford, H. C. May 6. Ore and oxide processes.-In the direct reduction of iron ore, the ore is first heated to a temperature of 1000‹ F. or upwards, without access to air, and is mixed while hot with solid or liquid carbonaceous reducing- agent, the carbon being in sufficient excess to prevent reoxidation of the metal. The ore first traverses a rotary cylinder 16 fitted with a screw conveyer a, and is then discharged into a second cylinder 15 in admixture with coal &c. from a hopper 24. The spongy metal is discharged through an outlet m and reduction gases, which consist mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, escape through an outlet m<1> The cylinders are heated by combustion products from a fire-box 4.
