Abstract
11,118. Wade, H., [Cross Paper Feeder Co.]. May 5. Sheet-separators; registering-devices; carriers; dropping-roller feeds.-Relates to apparatus for feeding sheets to printing and like machines, of the kind in which the sheet is registered against the front stops by two sets of rollers &c. acting intermittently on opposite sides of the centre line of the sheet, and consists in arranging such devices to act alternately, as well as intermittently, and in the provision of mechanism for returning an improperly-fed sheet out of reach of the grippers. The invention is described as applied to a Cross Paper Feeder in which the sheets are separated from the top of the pile by friction feed wheels raised and lowered by mechanism controlled by a feeler engaging the front edge of the separated sheet. The sheet is then fed to the machine by rollers 3, 12 on shafts 5 and 14 connected by chain and spur gear 15, 16, and co-operating drop rollers 4, 13, the shafts 5, 14 being oscillated by gearing from the sector 6 rocked by rack-and-pinion gear from the main shaft 10. The rollers 13 are carried on a shaft supported in arms 15<1> on a sleeve 17 loose on the sliaft 41, and rocked thereon by a rod 18 and bell-crank 20 from a cam 21 on the shaft 10. When the sheet has reached or nearly reached the front stops 11, the sheet is acted on by two notched registering- rollers 24 on a shaft 26 driven continuously by chain gear 27 from the shaft 10. The rollers 24 are set so that a projection on one is in alinement with a recess on the other, whereby they act alternately. Coacting with the rollers 24 are rollers 25 carried in bell-cranks 30, pivoted on arms 31 fixed to a transverse rod 32. Each bell-crank carries a finger 35, in contact with arms 36 on the sleeve 17, so that as the rollers 13 are raised, the rollers 25 are lowered by springs into contact with the rollers 24 and vice versa. The alternate action of the registering rolls may be effected by separating and bringing together the rolls of each pair alternately, instead of employing notched rolls. If the sheet has not been positioned correctly against the stops 11, a pawl 56 on a swinging lever 51 is lowered by the action of a feeler 60 into engagement with a sector 49 fixed on a shaft 43 and connected yieldingly bv a rod 45 to an arm 46 on the shaft 41. On the shaft 41 are arms 40 carrying sectors 38, which, when the shaft 41 is rocked, are lowered into contact with rollers 39, on the shaft 14 of the rollers 12, which is now rotating in the opposite direction,. whereby the sheet is withdrawn from the stops 11 just before the grippers 136 on the cylinder would seize it normally.
