Abstract

10,955. Diening, L. W., Wester, P.. Deth, P. J. van, and M³nching, C. L. D von. May 2, 1913, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Section 91 of the Act]. Cartridge belts.-Relates to machines for automatically loading cartridge belts, and consists in intermittently reversing the motion of the feedwheels whereby the forward part of the belt is set back relatively to a part of the belt which is gripped in the rear of the empty pocket, and the two sides of the pocket are forced apart. Fig. 2 is a plan of apparatus. The cartridge-belt, into which the first cartridge is inserted by hand, is fed forwards between two superposed feed-wheels, of which the upper one KI is shown. The lower feed-wheel is mounted on a spindle I which carries also a star-wheel a and a bevel-wheel b. A vertical shaft II rotated, through bevel gearing K, by a hand-wheel V, has two radial arms c, d, of which the upper one c engages the top teeth of the star-wheel a, and rotates the shaft I so as to feed the cartridge belt through one space forwards, while the arm d has a tooth x which engages with the lowest teeth of the bevel-gear b and rotates the feed-wheels backwards. A gripper v holds the part of the belt that is underneath it during the latter movement, so that the reversed rotation of the feed-wheels crumples up the belt and opens the pocket to receive a cartridge pushed from a magazine M by a spring-controlled plunger P operated through a rack H by teeth E on the lower end of the shaft II. A machine, working in the manner set out above, but having tappets on an horizontal shaft for rotating the feed-wheels in the two directions is also described. The feed-wheels are on two shafts which are provided with intermeshing gear-wheels. The recesses of the feed-wheels are roughened, and adapted for use with " buckle " belts. It is also stated that the pocket-opening may be effected by holding that part of the belt that has passed between the feed-wheels and imparting a further rotation to the wheels.
