Couplings, automatic; draw-gear.-A combined car and train-pipe coupling comprises a hollow draw-head 10 within which is pivoted, to swing horizontally, a spring-centralized hook 12, the two train-pipes 40 being attached to terminals, such as that shown in section in Fig. 4, having a spring-pressed gasket 23 projecting beyond the flanged face of the drawhead. When two cars come together, each hook enters the opposite draw-head, deflects the hook therein, and engages with it. The opposed gaskets 23 bear on each other in close contact under the spring pressure and form air-tight joints. Relative vertical and lateral motion between the draw-heads is prevented by pins 21 on each head engaging holes in the other, the pins being tapered so as to bring the draw-heads into alinement. Uncoupling is effected by deflexion of the hooks by means of a cam 17 turned by an arm 16 and a chain or the like 29. A hole is made in the draw-head at 36 to receive a coupling-pin when the car is to be coupled to one having an ordinary coupling.
