9983. Rees, D. April 22. Fixing by sockets of special forms with barb, wedge, and like holding- devices.-Relates to means for securing the handles to picks, hammers, axes, &c. of the kind wherein the eye of the tool is provided with four or more longitudinal tapering ribs or barbs of rectangular shape in crosssection, which are arranged in pairs diametrically opposite and hold the handle securely when it is driven in. The socket or eye 1 is tapered from the bottom to the top and the ribs 3, which extend the whole length of the socket, taper so that they project into the socket more at the top than at the bottom and wedge the handle firmly in position.
