Abstract
9295. Thorssell, C. T., and Lunden, H. L. R. April 14. Distilling and evaporating plant and processes.-Liquids are distilled or evaporated at or near their critical temperatures and pressures in order to eliminate losses due to latent heat of evaporation. The apparatus comprises a suitably heated still 1 from which the vapours pass through a valve 3, opening at a predetermined pressure-difference and causing the condensation of vapours by the cooling due to the Joule-Thomson effect. The resulting liquid is cooled in a coil 5 by heat-exchange with the feed-liquid, which enters the container 4 by a pipe 10 and passes therefrom to the still through a pipe 13 fitted with a non-return valve 14. The pressure of the cooled distillate is afterwards used in a cylinder 7 to aid the motor 9 which drives the feed - pump 8. In distilling water, for example, the temperature in the still 1 is 374‹ C., and the pressures in the still 1 and the coil 5 are 225 and 222 kg. per sq. cm. respectively.
