Abstract
9067. Willett, H. W. M. April 9. Dressing &c.-A machine for cutting, dressing, &c. the ends, sides, &c. of blocks of stone or the like comprises a pair of reciprocating carriers containing tools in alinement and capable of moving so that one carrier causes a cut to commence in a direction towards a supporting-bed before a reverse cut due to the other carrier commences, and the latter cut is completed first. The cuts overlap. As shown in a. stone-cutting machine, tool-carriers c, f, one or both of which are counterbalanced, are reciprocated in guides on a pillar c by connecting- rods and cranks k driven by meshing- wheels s, t, the wheel t being driven by a spur-wheel u adapted to be rotated by a handwheel z or from pulleys x through a clutch y controlled by a weighted foot-lever 1. The crankpins k may be radially adjustable, and d t h e upper tool-carrier e may be in two parts adjustable by a screw and fixed by a nut n. The work is carried by a table b which is moved towards the tools by a screw 3 and is traversed past them by a screw 4 rotated by a hand-wheel 25 or through gearing from a shaft 5. Between cuts, the shaft 5 is driven from the wheel t through a clutch 6 and wheels 9; while the tools are cutting, a composite cam 11, which may be adjusted for timing, engages a roller 18 on a lever 17 and acts through links 19 and bell-crank levers 20 to hold open the clutch 6 against the resistance of a spring 10. The screw 4 is driven from the shaft 5 through a clutch 32, either of the bevel-wheels 30, a bevelwheel 29, and either slow gearing 27, 26, 24 or quick gearing 28, 24, the pinion 24 being slidable on its shaft to change the speed or stop the drive. After each traverse, the clutch 32 is moved over to the previously-loose wheel 30 by the oscillation of its lever 33, which is effected through a shaft 34, a lever 35, a link 36, and a lever 37 which is oscillated by the engagement with arms 40 of tappets on the table b. The machine may be arranged to have horizontal cuts.
