8508. Singewald, M. April 3. Printing and embossing surfaces.-Relates to apparatus for embossing characters or numerals on the rims of disks used in paging-machines, cash registers, counting-apparatus, &c. in which the work f is pressed by a stamp g<1> in a matrix a provided with radially slidable disks c and embraced by a tapered lock ring e, and consists in making the stamp g<1>, Fig. 1, or the blank f<11>, Fig. 5, convex, so that the centre is first engaged. The stamp g<1> is followed by a stamp having a less convex face, and finally by a flatfaced stamp. A flat-faced stamp g<11> is used to act on the convex blank f<11>. Annular V- grooves i may be made in the upper surfaces of the disks c<11>, and an annular slot h in the matrix, so that a ring with a wedge-shaped edge may be inserted to force the dies outward and release the blank. To make the characters sharper, the disk may be placed in a second matrix having dies with impressions shallower than the dies first used. The disk is clamped between the stamps, and then the dies are forced inwards by means of the ring c.
