Abstract

7662. Fairweather, W., [Singer Manufacturing Co.]. March 26. Sewing-machines; thread-cutters and threadend holders.-The shuttle and needle threads are cut, when the machine is stopped at the end of a series of stitch-forming operations, by cutter-blades 19, 20 on an arm 21 provided with a sector-gear 22 actuated by a rack as described in Specifications 4051/04 and 17,088/11. The arm 22 is, however, provided with a barbed thread-carrying arm 48. When the machine is re-started, the needle descends, and,the shuttle engages the loop and draws the loose end of the thread through the needle hole 54. The sector gear is then actuated to move the arm 21 back from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 5, and the arm 48 engages the loose end of the needle thread and carries it between a fixed jaw 47 secured to the throat plate and a spring-controlled jaw 44 pivoted at 45. As the arm 48 continues to move, a cam-surface 50 thereon engages a pin 51 on the jaw, which is thus caused to close on the jaw 47 and nip the thread. The arm 48 then draws the nipped thread over a fixed blade 52, whereby the needle thread is again cut. The jaws remain closed while the machine makes several stitches, and then the arm 48 returns to normal position, Fig. 5, so that the camsurface 50 is disengaged from the pin 51 and the jaws re-open.
