Abstract
7210. Waite, G. B. March 21. Reinforced-concrete floors, girders, and columns; reinforced concrete. - A reinforced concrete building having several floors supported by columns is formed with a self-supporting skeleton which is of sufficient strength to carry the moulds and temporary loads during erection and, when embedded in concrete, acts as the tensile reinforcement. The columns 11, Fig. 1, support single or twin steel joists 18, 19 which reinforce the main girders and carry the ends of the steel transverse or floor beams 20. All the steelwork is placed below the neutral axis of the finished floor. Fig. 4 shows the relative positions of the main and floor beams and a column ; between the columns, the floor beams 28, Fig. 5, may be carried over the main beams 27 or be framed on the same level. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show bulb-bar reinforcements with diagonal ribs 33, 34, the lower flange being preferably larger than the upper flange. In the modification shown in Figs, 10, 11, and 12, the columns are reinforced with an angle-iron skeleton braced by means of clamps 38 and flat bars 39. The girder reinforcement consists of two channel-irons 41 supported by the bars 39 and clamped together at intervals; the ends are curved inwards to approach each other. Negative reinforcements 43 and shear members 44, 46 are also provided. Another form of beam reinforcement consists of a joist 47, Fig. 14, of the full span between the columns and carrying a supplemental joist 48 short of the ends and secured by stirrups 50 which are passed through both webs: Specification 5667/08 is referred to.
