Abstract

5863. Hirsch, F. March 8, 1913, [Convention date]. Chrome tanning. - In chrome tanning, the chromic acid or salts thereof are reduced by a solution of aluminium bisulphite, zinc bisulphite, or a mixture of the two without any further addition of an acid. As an example of carrying out the process, the skins are fulled for three and a half hours in a bath containing five per cent of potassium bichromate, two and a half per cent of muriatic acid, and one hundred and eighty per cent of water calculated on the weight of the true skin. Thereafter, the skins lie for twelve hours in a bath containing thirty-six litres of aluminium sulphite solution of 14‹ BÚ. and two hundred and twenty litres of water for one hundred kilos of skins. The skins are finally moved about in this bath for four hours. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also a process for restricting the retarding action which the zinc and aluminium bisulphites have upon the reduction of chromic acid bv the addition of acids or bisulphites of the alkaline earths or alkalies with acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
