3193. Meditsch, F. Feb. 6. Artificial feathers.- In order to form the quill of an artificial feather by continuing the filaments constituting the barbs to the bottom of the quill, thread &c. is wound round pins on a frame, and the portions to form the quill pressed into a groove, the outer ends being then cut. The thread 5, Fig. 3, is started from a pin 3 on a frame 4 and wound round pins 6, 7, 8, 9, back round the pin 6, and thence to the other side over pins 10, 11, 12, and so on. The lower portions are then compressed together to form the quill, and the outer ends of the loops are cut and trimmed. Figs. 4 and 6 show another frame having pegs 21, 23 over which the thread is wound, and a tapering groove in which the portions to form the quill are pressed by a lever 24. The thread is impregnated with an adhesive to consolidate the quill, and the lever is, if necessary, heated; it may also be provided with lateral pins or projections to force the thread into the groove 20.
