Abstract
2539. Healy Box Co., [Healy, W. P.]. March 10, 1913. Stapling. - Staple forming and driving mechanism for a machine for making boxblanks or crate-shooks comprises longitudinal grooves a<153> in a recess in the staple former a<145> in combination with an horizontal stockreceiving groove a<149> in the bottom face of the former. The staple formers, which are arranged obliquely to the binding-wire, have also a slot a<150> wherewith to engage the binding-wire. The reels of binding-wire and staple wire are carried above the machine by a frame fixed to it, and, to prevent the wire from jumping over the ends of the reels, they may have gravity brake shoes. The binding-wire is led tu the work over guide-rollers, one of which is shown at a<76>, and is stapled to the box sections by mechanism operated by upper and lower heads a<81>, a<79>, detachably and adjustably mounted on crossbars, the upper one being actuated from the main shaft and reciprocating in vertical guides in the machine frame. The staple wire is fed through an eye a<97> between intergeared feedrolls a<103>, a<105>, one of which is splined to an intermittently-operated shaft a<107>, a.nd the other loosely mounted on an eccentric shaft fast to an arm a<115>, through which a coiled spring acts so as to press the two feed-rolls together. The shaft a<197> is driven by a ratchet a<119> and a spring-pressed pawl a<121> carried by a loose arm a<123>, which is rocked by a rod a<125> actuated by a cam on the main shaft. To avoid stapling at any desired moment, for example at a joint between adjacent box sides, a cam a<221> is provided which, when placed in a suitable position, lifts the pawl a<121> out of gear with the ratchet a<119> and stops the staple-wire feed. This cam may be automatically operated, for example by lever connexions actuated from the conveyer chains. From the feed-rolls, the staple wire passes through a tube a<137> and a cutting-tube a<139> having a chamfered end and over a loop bar a<141>. The staple is formed on the descent of a former a<145> guided in the head a<79> and actuated initially by a dog a<155>. A chamfered corner on the former first cuts the wire, which lies over the loop bar and along the grooves a<149> in the bottom face of the former. The wire is then bent and forced into the longitudinal grooves a<153> on the former. A trip slide a<173> on the driver bar a<177> then engages a cam a<175> and rocks the loop bar a<141> out of the path of the staple. A pin a<161> on the dog a<155> also meets a cam a<163> and thus interrupts the positive drive of the former, which is then actuated through a spring a<169> till it meets the work and holds the binding-wire within the groove a<450> while the driver a<179> continues its movement and inserts the staple.
