.This invention relates to machines for inserting fastenings and particularly to machines which form staples from continuous material, such for example 2s wire, and then drive the staples in the work.
A general object of the present invention is to provide an improved staple forming and inserting machine which will be capable of operating in a given time upon a' greater amount of work than any machine heretofore constructed and which will operate with greater accuracy and efficiency.
In accordance with this object of the invention the staple forming and inserting machine herein shown and described as illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a novel staple forming and inserting organization constructed and arranged to insert in two superimposed portions of a-piece of work two staples in axial alinement. In the illustrated embodiment of this feature of the invention, two staple forming and inserting mechanisms are disposed oppositely relatively to each other and are connected to their operating means in such manner that the staple formlng and inserting operations of both mechanisms are efiected substantially simultaneously.
In accordance with another feature of the invention the illustrated staple forming and driver in staple inserting direction causes relative movement of the inside former and the outside former to form a staple and pre sent it in position to beinserted in the work. This feature of the invention is of considerable practical importance since it provides an extremely simple and eflicient construction capable of operating with certainty and at a high rate of speed. v
According to a further feature of the invention' andas shown, the machine is provided with a two-faced anvil disposed between the fastening inserting mechanisms and having oppositeh arranged clenching cavities in aline'ment with the respective drivers, the illustrated anvil comprising two members constructed and arranged to yield independently of one another, for example, to compensate for variations in work thickness. i

The wire coils are wound upon reels mounted on the machine frame and the wires are fed to the machine by duplicate sets of feed wheels 80 and 82. The feed wheels 80, the wire engaging faces of which are corrugated, are mounted upon a single shaft 84 which has bearings in a bracket 85 on the machine frame. The cooperating feed rolls 82 are. also carried by a single shaft 89 mounted in a bracket 86 and these rolls are maintained in yielding engagement ing gears91 1 with the feed wheels 80 by a spring pressed 7 plunger 90 the outer end of which engages the shaft 89. A staple forming and inserting for operating said f chine comprising opposed twin staple form ing and inserting mechanisms each comprising an outside former, an insideform'er and a driver, said mechanisms being constructed said mechanisms and and arranged to receive a shoe upper between them and to insert in the shoe upper upon opposite sides thereof two staples in substantial alinement, a two-faced anvil permanently fixed relatively to both mechanisms to support the two sides of the shoe upper against the action of anisms, said anvil being constructed and arranged to present to each of said mechanisms a clenching cavity in the line of drive of the driver of that mechanism, together with power driven operating mech anism including connections with each of said staple forming and inserting mechanisms constructed and arranged to cause said staple forming and inserting mechanisms to operate substantially simultaneously. A staple forming and inserting machine comprising suitable staple forming and inserting mechanisms, means for ca-using said mechanisms to insert simultaneously two staples in axial alinement intwo superimposed portions of apiece of work, and a single pivoted anvil constructed and arranged to co-act with anisms whereby the staples are clenched in the work.
4:- A staple forming and inserting machine comprising two oppositely arranged staple forming and' inserting mechanisms including drivers, an anvil disposed'between adapted to co-act with both said mechanisms, means to equalize the force exerted by the drivers upon the anvil, and means for operating the staple forming and inserting mechanisms simultaneously and in opposite directions.

A- staple forming and inserting machine comprising two oppositely arranged staple forming and inserting mechanisms, an anvil disposed between said mechanisms adapted to co-act with both said mechanisms, and constructed and arranged to distribute between two portions of the work the staple inserting force, and a single means for operating the staple forming and inserting mechanism simultaneously in opposite directions.
6. A staple forming and inserting machine comprising two oppositely arranged staple forming and inserting mechanisms, and an anvil disposed between said mechanisms and having staple engaging faces permanent-1v alined with the respective mechanisms.

A staple forming and inserting machine comprising two staple forming and inserting mechanisms arranged to insert staples in opposite directions, and an anvil mounted yieldingly between said mechanisms and having staple engaging faces alined to support the work against the action of both said mechanisms.

A staple forming and inserting machine having, in combination, staple formsaid mechboth of said mech- 'ing and inserting mechanisms each compris mg outside and inside formers and a driver, together with an anvil disposed between said mechanisms and comprising relatively movable members provided with clenching surfaces in line with the respective drivers.

A staple forming and inserting machine having, in combination, twin staple forming and inserting mechanisms each comprising outside and inside formers and a driver, together with an anvil disposed be tween said mechanisms and comprising independently yielding members provided with clenching cavities in line with the respective drivers.

A staple forming and inserting machine having, in combination, twin staple forming and inserting mechanisms each comprising outside and inside formers and a driver. together with an anvil disposed between said mechanisms and comprising two levers having their freeends normally spaced and each provided with a staple clenching cavity in line with a driver, the other ends of the levers being drawn toward by a spring operating to keep the free ends of the levers normally sepa-' rated while permitting I ficiently to compensate for work differences.

A staple forming and inserting machine comprising two oppositely arranged staple forming and inserting mechanisms each .comprising an outside former, an inside former and a driver, and power driven operatin means for said mechanisms comprising an actuating crank, a slotted lever, and connections from said lever to both of said mechanisms.

A staple forming and inserting machine comprising oppositely arranged twin staple forming and insertin mechanisms each comprising an outside side former and a driver, levers connected with the respective drivers, one of said levers having a guideway at one end, a cam operated ivot block received in said guideway, and a block pivotally mounted on said other lever and received in said guideway whereby said, drivers are simultaneously moved ppositely by said first named block through said levers upon operative movement of said first named block.
