Abstract

1916. Bertrams, Ltd., and Gillespie, R. F. Jan. 24. Cutting tubes of cylindrical form transversely to their length. -In machines for cutting india - rubber and like tubes into sections to form rings, washers, &c., and wherein a number of tube - carrying mandrels are carried by a rotating disk through a circular path to present the tubes in succession to the cutters, the mandrels travel continuously and are automatically discharged from the machine after the tubes thereon have been cut. The mandrels M are supported between fixed centres I carried by a disk G<1> and spring-pressed centres I carried by a disk G<2>, the disks being mounted on a shaft H turned continuously by worm or other gearing T from the main driving - shaft R. The mandrels are rotated between the centres I by driving-chucks P turned by a belt Q from a pulley S on the shaft R, the belt being tensioned by spring-actuated rollers. After a. tube has been severed by cutters D, a spring brake engages the corresponding pulley P to stop its rotation, and a head W on the corresponding spring-pressed centre I engages a fixed cam V, which withdraws the centre and allows the mandrel to fall on to a table U; in case the cam V fails to act, hooks are provided to eject the mandrels. Either fixed or rotating cutters are employed. The mandrels are fed into the machine either manually or, according to the Provisional Specification, automatically.
