Abstract

1790. Cowell, W. B. Jan. 22. Surface-heating apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for heating road surfaces, of the kind in which a box open at the bottom is placed upon the roadway and heated internally by oil burners or a blast of hot air, and consists in employing a box having low vertical sides and a domed top, a diaphragm capable of absorbing heat being provided at the junction of the top and sides. In the form shown, a diaphragm, formed of perforated tiles e of metal or refractory material such as earthenware mounted on #-iron supports, is arranged at the junction of the sides r and pyramidal top f of the rectangular box. The top and sides may be lagged with asbestos, and hot air may be admitted through the top of the box by means of a pipe k closed at the bottom and provided with lateral perforations l. As an alternative or additional heating-means, blowlamps o mounted on side brackets o<1> may be arranged to deliver flame through openings p, air under pressure being supplied through the pipe k.
