Surface areas, computing.-In area-measuring apparatus for leather and like materials, in which the movement of the measuring-parts is communicated to the lever actuating the indicating-pointer through the usual system of integrating-levers, and thence by a flexible band engaging the curved surface of a segmental slide adjustably mounted on the actuating-lever, the curved surface is concentric with the fulcrum of the lever in one position only of the slide and consequently only transmits the movement of the measuring-parts accurately in this position. To remedy this, the slide g is formed in two parts g, t, the part t being independently adjustable with respect to the main portion g of the slide by being pivoted thereto at a point u, approximately coinciding with the lowest point of contact of the flexible band i with the curved surface h of the part t when the pointer a is in its zero position. The slide is adjusted along the actuating-lever e by means of an adjustable screw r, the position of the slide being indicated by a scale y, while the portion t is adjusted in addition about its axis u by means of a screw v, the angular adjustment being indicated by a pointer and scale x, w. Templets, such as sheets of paper of known area, are made use of in adjusting the slide, so as to give accurate readings of 'the given areas on the dial b.
