Abstract

1114. Power, J. Jan. 15. Boot-soles, machines for making by stitching together plaits of fibrous material. - The coiled plaits are stitched together at the toe and heel before being compressed into sole shape, and the compressed soles are afterwards stitched through. These operations are performed by one lock-stitching machine. The compressed soles are carried in a clamp 69 and moved forward by a screw 67. They first pass two oppositely-arranged reciprocating and rotating awls 81, 96 spaced a stitch-length apart, and each of which drills thread holes half - way through the soles. The stitching is effected by a reciprocating shuttle 36 and a tubular needle 34 having an eye near its point, from which the needle-thread emerges. The thread is tightened by a take-up arm 45<a>. For stitching the toe and heel portions, the carrier 69 is removed, the awls put out of action, and a spiked support 1 upon which a sole is impaled is intermittently rotated. The same needle is used, but the shuttle race is moved so that the shuttle enters the thread loops as they are formed rearwardly through the hollow pin upon which the support 1 turns. The thread holes are prepared by a reciprocating and rotating awl 13. The shuttle has three thread-tensioning pins 36<d>, Fig. 15, inside and thread-tensioning perforations 36<e> in the lid. The feed movements are originated by means of the gear shown in Figs. 13 and 14. A cam 73 has three flats and intermediate recesses. The flats, in turn, slide upon the surface of a constantly rotating disk 74, thereby 'holding the spindle 71 of the cam locked. A bar 80 projects from the face of the disk 74 and bridges a cavity in the face. When the bar reaches the cam, it engages a recess in the cam and turns it, bringing the next flat on the cam into the plane of the disk. The foot-lever which controls the starting-clutch is held depressed by a cam when the machine is started, until a certain number of stitches have been made. Then the cam releases the foot-lever, and the machine is stopped.
