Abstract
165. Horstmann, E. H., Horstmann, G. O. H., Horstmann, A., Horstmann, S. A., and Edgar, W. T. Jan. 3. Actuating.-In an arrangement for operating gas-valves, electric switches, &c. by clock-work mechanism in which tappets acting through an operating-lever produce angular displacements of the valve or other member in opposite directions, the sequence of the series of operations is continuously maintained by the selective or discriminative nature of one or more, but not all, of the tappets. The arrangement comprises a lever a with a thrust lever c, as described in Specification 14,825/11, co-operating with a recessed plate z secured to the oscillating valve or like member. As the tappet c is carried round by the dial and engages the lever a, a pin d thereon contacts with the end m of the lever c, and the pin c<1> is forced into engagement with a recess b<4> on one side of the valve plate. The valve is thereby closed. When the sub-tappet n of the tappet w engages the lever a, it allows the lever c to lift under the influence of the weight h, the pin c<1> then engaging the recess b<2>, and a pin j and extension k limiting the movement of the valve. By this means, the main valve is opened. The next sub-tappet p allows the pin c<1> to enter the recess b<6>, the valve being thus rotated to cut off the pilot and leave only the burner alight. When the tappet e again comes round and engages with the lever a, the pin c<1> is first withdrawn from the recess b<6> with a slight circular movement, during which the pin engages the barbed projections b<5> to rotate the valve into a position to supply gas to both the main and pilot burners. As the tappet c completes its movement, the pin d acts as described above to divert the pin c' into the recess b' to close the main valve. In a modification, the valve plate member z is used in an inverted position, each tappet not contacting with the lever a until after the passage of the ' line of centres,' that is, the line passing through the fulcrum of these two levers. In a simpler arrangement, the barbed projection b<5> is not used.
