Abstract

148. Fanta. F. Jan. 3. Bottling.- Relates to rotary and other apparatus employing a special filling-nozzle for bottles which are first exhausted, then counter-pressured and filled so as to prevent the liquid from being contaminated with atmospheric air within or without the bottles. The filling-tube is attached to a piston, which is drawn down by vacuum so that the tube touches the bottom of the bottle to operate a filling-valve, and after the bottle is filled high-pressure carbonic. acid gas is used to force up the piston and remove the filling-tube from the bottle so that this can be capsuled. The cycle is as follows. A vacuum chamber (not shown) is connected by means of a pipe y, a multiple-way valve F<1>, and a passage y<2> with the underside of the piston l carrying the filling-tube h. The vacuum draws down the piston so as to pass the filling-tube through the tube f<1> and gasket e into a bottle. If, however, the bottle is defective, no vacuum can be maintained and the piston is not drawn down. The filling-tube consists of an outer tube h and an inner tube i which is closed at o<2> but has an outlet passage i<1> through the outer tube h. The tubes h and i do not communicate. The lower end of the tube i is held by a washer n (see small figure). Passages o, o<1> are provided in the outer tube and by these passages bottles are exhausted and then counter-pressured by gas from a tube v, multiple-way valve E', and pipe u<1>. Liquid is supplied by a tube t, valve E', and passages t<2>, i<1> to the tube i. Liquid can only pass into the bottle when the valve q<1> (small figure) is opened by the rod r touching the bottom of the bottle. Return gas passes through passages o, o', u<1>, and another pipe (not shown) back to the reservoir. When liquid reaches the passage o, the outlet is blocked and filling stops. The valve F' is then turned so as to pass high-pressure gas into the pipe j beneath the piston l. This raises the piston and draws the tube h from the bottle, which can be lowered.or passed aside for capsuling.
