[Cognate Applications, 1850/14 and 8828/14.] Cables. - A flexible sheathed cable, comprising one or more conductors insulated with layers of paper &c. and enclosed in a flexible metal sheath, has the conductor or each conductor surrounded along its entire length by oil in direct contact therewith. The cable is constructed with longitudinal ducts or spaces d by arranging lengths of whipcord a &c. wound around the conductor b with a long quick pitch in an opposite direction to the lay of the coiiductor wires; or strips of corrugated or perforated sheet insulating - material may be arranged in the form of a ring between the conductor and its covering of insulating-material. The oil is forced under pressure into the interstices, as by the means described in Specification 29,757/13, and may be subjected to a yielding pressure greater than the normal barometric pressure while the cable is in use: The boxes f in communication with the interior of the cable may be charged with oil &c. and provided with means, such as the weighted plunger h, whereby the yielding pressure can be imparted to the oil in the cable. An air chamber containing air under pressure may be provided in the joint and terminal boxes.
