Abstract

28,731. Fairfax, J. S. Dec. 12. [Cognate Applications, 3793/14 and 6542/14.] Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, construction of; propelling; steering.-An aerial machine is formed of a tubular structure which acts as a supporting - plane and serves to house the motor, propeller, and crew. The tube is formed of a braced frame a, Fig. 1, covered with fabric or sheet metal, and is of triangular, square, or similar cross-section. The base b<5> may be provided with two series of slats d<2>, Fig. 17, which may be inclined to deflect an air-current into the interior to steer the machine vertically. Front and rear cross rudders c may be connected together for simultaneous actuation. The motor b is arranged on the base of the tube at the centre of gravity and drives propellers b<1> enclosad in an inner tube b<4>. Casings d<2> containing horizontally-arranged fans are fitted to the underside of the platform b<5> and are provided with a central and arearperipheral opening so that, as the machine descends, the propeller directs a current of air rearwards. Planes, arrangement of.-The sides of the main tube a may be omitted so as to leave upper and lower planes with their length in the direction of flight. Parachutes; aerial machines adapted to travel also on land.-Each end of the tubular structure may be provided with a collapsible hood which is extended by lowering a pivoted frame d<2>, Fig. 7, in order to convert the machine into a parachute. Land wheels d are arranged as shown in Fig. 7. Balancing automatically. When the machine is falling vertically, the air pressure acts on a flap or trips the hand-lever actuating the slats d<2>, Fig. 17, whereby the slats are moved into an inclined position for directing the machine into a gliding flight.
