Spindle-driving apparatus; stop - motions; tension arrangements.-In a machine for winding yarns, threads, &c, wherein the winding- spindle is driven by a friction-wheel which cooperates with a disk on the spindle, a lever 1 held in normal position by a spring 5 is operated by abnormal tension of the thread so as to separate or vary the contactual engagement of the friction - wheel and disk d, which may be arranged in the manner described in Specification 8649/13. If the movement of the lever 1 is not too great, the spring 5 may restore it to its normal position and the winding may proceed ; but if the tension is excessive, the lever 1 is depressed until it is automatically engaged by a catch-lever 13 and the winding-spindle is stopped. The thread passes over a roller 11 on a rod adjustably secured to the lever 1, and through the usual guide or tension device k.
