Abstract
28,450. Thomas, R. B., Thomas, H. S., and Davies, W. R. Dec. 9. Cleaning; pickling; tinning and coating by dipping. - Tin, terne, and other metal-coated plates are manufactured by passing the plates separately through a machine comprising a pickling-bath, a swilling - bath or other swilling-device, a tin or like pot, a grease pot, and branning or dusting apparatus, the spaces between the various parts of the machine being occupied by guides, rollers, or other transferring - mechanism which renders unnecessary the employment of hand-labour between the introduction of the plates into the machine and their removal therefrom. A mechanical feeding - device may be employed for feeding the plates from a pile and introducing them singly into the machine. The feeding-device preferably consists of a lever a, Fig. 1, carrying a sucker as described in Specification 14,851/13, which delivers the plates singly to an inclined series of rollers c leading to a pickling-bath d, through which they are carried by counterbalanced pushing-arms e. As the plates leave the pickling-bath, they are transferred to a swilling-bath g by pivoted arms f, which are operated when pins e<2> on the arms e strike tail-pieces f<2>. The plates are pushed through the swilling-bath by arms h and then pass over rollers i to the coating-bath k, in front of which is a timing-device comprising a stop i<2>, which is raised in the path of the plate by a weighted lever l and is depressed, at the proper interval to allow a plate to enter the bath, by means of a sliding bar n which is operated by rotating cams p, the plate then entering the feed-rolls t and being carried through the bath by pushers s. The plate is carried through the grease pot at a slower speed than through the coating-bath, and is discharged, preferably by apparatus of the kind described in Specification 12.601/13, and passes to a branning-machine. In a modified arrangement, the plates are fed singly from a pile to a platform 1, Fig. 2, which is tilted periodically to allow the plate to fall into the pickling-bath, through which it is carried by disks or wheels e having a flat e<1> at one side. The plate is swilled by a row of water jets 7 adjacent to the rolls 8, which carry it to the coating-bath k through which it is pushed by arms s<1> and discharged on to a platform 9, which is tilted to allow the plate to pass into a bran trough 12 through which it is pushed by fingers 13. The plate then passes to the dusting-machine 17, the finished sheet being received on an inclined shelf 18.
