Hand tools for cutting roots below soil level.-An implement for cutting stalks of asparagus some distance below the surface of the ground comprises a ground - penetrating ring c mounted on the end of a handled rod a and having resting on its upper surface a rotary sickle-shaped knife g secured to a sleeve d', d<2> surrounding the rod a. The ring c tapers from its lower edge to its flat upper surface to facilitate entering the ground. The knife g is normally held in a protected position on the flat upper surface by a spring f interposed between the handle b<2> of the rod a and the handle e of the sleeve d<1>, d<2>; the spring also exerts a turning effect on the knife holding it yieldingly against a tapered stop h. The sleeve d<1>, d<2> may be formed in two parts connected by teeth such that if the knife engages an obstacle when turned to cut a stalk, the teeth will ride over each other.
