Abstract

27,672. Buck, W. F. Dec. 1. Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises levers 2, which oscillate about a fixed pivotshaft 1. The levers 2 have slots 6 in which slide pins 4 making adjustable connexion with rods 5 extending to a driving crank-shaft 3. On the other side of the shaft 1, the levers 2 have slots 8 in which slide pins 7 making adjustable connexion through links 9 or chains and ratchet clutches 10 with a driven shaft 11. The pins 4, 7 of each lever 2 are connected by a link 12 so that they must move together to vary the speed transmitted. The links 12 are shifted to vary the speed by wires 13, which pass over pulleys 14 to a drum 15 actuated by hand. At the inner end of each slot 8 is an enlarged opening 17 to allow the shaft 11 to be brought to rest. Springs 18 are provided to prevent shocks.
