Abstract

25,923. Morris, J. T. Nov. 12. Anemometers. -A device for measuring the velocities of gases or vapours comprises a number of wires c, d, e, f formed from materials such as iron, nickel, platinum, or carbon, all having approximately the same temperature-coefficient of appreciable maguitude. The wires d, e are exposed to the air currents, and the wires c, f are shielded from it by tubes b which extend between the plates a, between which the wires are stretched. The wires are connected up with a source of current and a galvanometer &c. so as to form a Wheatstone-bridge or like network. The cooling effect produced in the wires d, c when exposed to the current of gas &c. produces a current through the galvanometer, which is preferably a square-law instrument. A socket m is provided, by means of which the instrument can be supported on a stick and raised to a suitable height above the head of the observer.
