Abstract

Pictures; pictures, mounting.-Pictures executed on paper, cardboard, &c. are mounted by embedding them in a suitable backing-mass, and the picture material and backing are rendered uniform by applying over a desired area an opaque coating whereby the picture finally presents the appearance of having been produced directly on the surface of the backing- mass. According to one method, the picture, for example a pictorial post card, is laid face downwards in a mould, and a setting-mass, such as plaster of paris, is poured upon it and allowed to dry. The mass with the embedded picture is then removed, and a coating of paint or like opaque substance is applied over a desired area of the backing-mass and picture, after which varnish may be applied to the whole. The extent of surface over which the opaque coating is applied depends upon the character of the picture; in some cases, the coating may be applied so as to form the background of the picture, and in other cases, the coating may cover only sufficient of the edge of the picture as to conceal the junction between the backing- mass and picture material. The backing-mass may be reinforced by incorporated wirework and may be cast in any desired shape. Instead of employing a setting-mass for the backing, papier mÔchÚ or like material may be used, in which case the picture is embedded by being pressed into the mass, the subsequent operations being the same as previously described.
