Abstract

25,362. Menzel, P. Nov. 6. Paper and fibrous pipes and tubes, impregnated with asphalt or the like and having an even layer of asphalt or the like of greater thickness than the paper or fibrous material between the various convolutions, are made in a machine in which the fibrous band, on its way to the winding-mandrel, is brought more or less close to the transferring- device according as a thin or thick asphaltic intermediate layer is required. The production of a tube involves the opening of the split bearings 9 and the introduction of a mandrel 10 therein ; the support 3 carrying the bearings 9 and mandrel 10 is then moved to the left over the table 49 by turning the handle 6, which operates spur-wheels 7 meshing with racks 8 beneath the guides 2. The rollers 32, 33 are then adjusted by the hand-wheel 43 to the correct distance for the particular thickness of tube to be wound, and at the same time the operator sets an electric contact-device arranged to cut off the driving-power from the tube machine when the lever 27, Fig. 4, is moved upwards on account of the increasing tube pressing up the roller 28. The band 102 moves from the stock roll 104 over the jockey 110, the supporting-roller 93, and the conveyer 101 to the mandrel 10. The table 49 is then raised by the hand-wheel 98, which acts through the chain-and-sprocket gear 100, 60 on a rack gear on the standard carrying the table, and a series of spring-carried rollers 75 are moved up from their normal position below the surface of the table by swinging over the counterweight lover 68. The rollers thus force the band on to the drum 10 and cause it to stick thereto, so that, on rotation, the band starts to wind on to the drum, and inasmuch as the brake 105 prevents the supply drum 104 from rotating, the drum 10 and its supports 3 move towards the rollers 32, 33. The supporting-roller 93 is carried on a lever 94 pivoted at 95, and the lever is connected by a link 97 with a rod 20 axially movable in bearings 21. Adjustable stops 18, 19 are provided on this rod, which can be engaged by a catch 17 on the support 3, so that as the supports 3 move towards the rollers 32, 33, the catch 17 engages the stop 18 so as to move the rod 20, the lever 94, and roller 93 to the right and thus force the band into contact with the coating-roller 79. This roller 79 is supplied with asphalt from the trough 89, which is furnished with heating- coils 90 and a mixer 91. The roller 78 dips into the molten asphalt and, by its rotation, coats the roller 87, and an adjustable grooved channel allows a sufficiently thick even layer to be transferred from the roller 87 to the coating-roll 79. By altering the position of the stop 18 on the bar 20, the position of rest of the levers 97, 94 and the roller 93, as left by the catch 17, can be varied, and thus the distance of the paper from the roll 79 and the thickness of molten asphalt transferred can be adjusted. When the rotating mandrel 10 reaches the rollers 32, 33, the brake 105 is slackened, and the tube finally gets sufficiently thick to lift the roller 28 and thus stop the drum from further rotation. The table 49 is then lowered, and the drum 10 and its supports 3 are moved to the left so as to engage the drum 10 in the fork bearings 34, 34<a>; this movement also engages the catch 17 with the stop 19 so as to move the roller 93 to the left and throw the coating-device out of action. The supports 3, without the covered drum 10, are then brought back over the table 49, a new drum is introduced, and the table is raised again so as to force the band against the new drum. A cutter 77 carried on the table severs the band, and the free end is wound up on the covered mandrel 10 by hand, the board 48 serving to press it down into contact. The other severed end is made to adhere to the new mandrel, and the process goes on as before. The wound drum is removed from the bearings 34 by heating the inside of the drum, and the inner layer of asphalt is softened so as to facilitate taking the tube off the mandrel.
