Mills combined with separating or sorting apparatus.-In apparatus for preparing and sorting comminuted or powdered coal or other fuel, in which the fine particles are separated from the coarse particles by pneumatic means and returned to the mill to be re-ground, the pulverized material passes from the grinder 11, Fig. 1, by pipes 13, 15 to a fan 16 delivering to a dust-collector 19, from which the dust passes by a pipe 28 to a separator 30 divided into chambers 32, 33, Fig. 2, by a vertical partition 31, the heavier particles deposited in the chamber 32 being led by a shoot 75 to the hopper 12 of the mill, while the finer particles deposited in the chamber 33 pass by a shoot 76 to a bin 77. The finest particles are carried by a fan 64 and pipe 65 into a dust-collector 67, whence they pass by a shoot 78 into a bin 79. The chamber 32 of the separator is fitted with deflector plates 34, 35, between which are openings 37, 38 adjustable by flaps 39 and slides 50. The front ends of the shafts 40, on which the flaps 39 are mounted, are fitted with weighted levers 45 pivotally connected to an adjusting- rod 43, and the slides 50 have racks 51 gearing with pinions 52 on shafts 53 operated by worm gearing from a shaft 56. Air passing through the upper opening 37 is deflected downwards by a baffle 61. The dust-collectors 19, 67 are provided with frames 21, 68 covered with cheesecloth or fine wire-mesh, and similar fabric 24, 70 is stretched across the mouths of the bells 22, 69. A pipe 26 fitted with a damper 27 leads from the top of the collector 19 to the pipe 14, and a pipe 72 leads from the top of the collector 67 to the casing 59 on the separator 30. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) describes also a modification in which the pulverized coal &c. passes up a pipe 83, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), to a settling- chamber 85 having an inclined bottom 86, vertical partitions 89, and regulating-slides 91 in the side wall. The heavier particles are returned to the mill 80 by a door 87 and shoot 88, and the lighter particles are exhausted from the chamber 85 by a fan 93 and delivered to a cyclone dust-collector 95. The heavier particles separated in the collector pass by a shoot 96 to a bin 97, and the finer particles are carried into a closed chamber 99 connected by cloth pipes 100 to a lower closed chamber 101, from which a pipe 102 leads to the bin 97. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
