Abstract

24,269. Smith, T. O. Oct. 27. Rigging; spars.-In roller reefing gear, the boom is revolubly mounted on a pin, and a lever loosely mounted on the pin turns a crown ratchet-wheel at the end of the boom to reef the sail, the lever being canted to set free the ratchet-wheel when the reefs are shaken out. The boom c, revolubly mounted upon the gooseneck pin b<3>, carries a hollow boss c<2> having a crown ratchet-wheel c'with under cut teeth at its end. A fixed pawl b5 upon the gooseneck normally engages the ratchet teeth. A lever e loosely mounted on the gooseneck pin engages with the ratchet teeth c<3> to rotate the boom when the sail is to be reeved. To let out the sail, the lever e is canted and, taking a fulcrum on a collar b<7>, presses the boom c back in an axial direction on the pin b<3> against the action of a spring d. The teeth c<3> are thus moved clear of the pawl b<5>, whereupon the sail may be hoisted. In the case of booms too heavy to allow this axial movement, the pawl b<5>, Fig. 11, on the gooseneck engages an intermediate pawl b<10> carried by a sliding disk b<8>. The lever e, when ranted, presses back the pawl b<5> and takes the pawl b<10> out of engagement with the ratchet teeth c<3>. The swivel-gear at the other end of the boom comprises a twoarmed lever g<@> carried by a cap g<1> swivelled to the after end of the boom. The lever g<2> carries the eye g<3> for the topping-lift tackle and the block g<8>, through which is passed the main sheet. In a modification, the application of the device to a roller fore-stay sail is described.
