[Cognate Application, 27,368/13.] Clutches, claw; securing clutches on shafts.- Relates to means for reducing the amount of rotary adjustment of the parts of claw clutches required to bring the teeth into register. The applications to winding-engines for raising and lowering cages and to other machines are referred to. As shown in Fig. 1, the sliding clutch part 1 has a number of holes for engaging the teeth 6 on the clutch part 3 and also a number of keyways 5, differing preferably by one from the number of teeth 6 and engaged by keys 4 on the shaft 2. When engagement of the clutch is desired, the part 1 is moved clear of the keys 4 and is then rotated and re-engaged with the keys in the position which will require least angular adjustment of the clutch parts to secure engagement of the clutch teeth. The clutch part 1 may be formed to engage a polygonal part 8 on the shaft, Fig. 2, and for rotation may be moved on to a polygonal sleeve 7 bored centrally to rotate freely on the shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the clutch part 1 carries a cylindrical flange 10 fitting the shaft, and when disengaged from the polygonal enlargement 8, is supported on rollers 12. In a modification, the part 1 has internal teeth engaging teeth on a sleeve secured on the shaft 2, and is retained in its extreme positions by a spring latch. When the clutch teeth wear, thin steel linings are secured to their faces. An indicator may be employed to show the best position of the part 1 for re-engagement.
