Abstract

Aluminium nitride ; calcium carbide ; alkali and alkaline-earth cyanides.-Aluminium nitride is prepared from a mixture of alumina or aluminous substances and carbon by blowing, dropping, or passing the mixture in a state of suspension through a space filled with nitrogen and heated to the temperature of the reaction. The heating may be effected in any known way, for example the tube through which the materials are passed may be of graphite and used as an electric heating resistance; or one or more arcs may be produced. therein, and these arcs may be blown magnetically or by a current of gas. If the reaction is not completed after a single passage, the treatment is repeated. The heat in the gases is used to preheat the materials, and the heat in the materials leaving the furnace is used to heat the gases. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the process to the production of chemical reactions in general between solids and solids, or solids and gases, and also the production of calcium carbide from lime and carbon; alkali and alkaline-earth cyanides from the corresponding oxides or carbonates and carbon in the presence of nitrogen; and baryta from barium nitrate and carbon. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
