Abstract

23,333. Sykes Interlocking Signal Co., W. R., and Tarrant, R. W. Oct. 15. Retractive switches operated by the passage of a vehicle over a line of rails. The apparatus consists of a pair of arms 14 securely attached to the rail and having strained between them a tension member 15 formed of a loop of wire attached to a control block 26 and oppositely twisted at opposite sides so that relative displacement of the arms 14 cause rocking of the block 26. The block carries an insulated forked contact arm 27 adapted to close the circuit between a pair of contacts 28, 29. The tension member is supported at the ends by square plugs 18 sliding in recesses in the arms 14 and adjusted by screws 19 protected by caps 23 which may be sealed. A protecting casing in two parts 34 is fitted on the arms 14 and held by bolts 37 locked by a bar 39. A distancepiece 30 carried between the arms 14 enables the apparatus to be correctly attached to the rail. In an alternative form for use when more sensitive apparatus is necessary, a link 45, Fig. 5, pivoted to one arm 14 at 21, is pivoted at the other end to the short arm of a lever 43, the long arm of which supports an end of the twisted tension member 15, the other end of which is attached to the former arm. In this case, the centrally mounted rocking member 46 consists of a cylindrical block of insulating material with a conducting strip to make contact between the members 47, 48.
