Abstract

22,356. Denne, M. T. Oct. 3, Sewing-machines; stopping - gear, non- automatic. - Driving and stopping mechanism for high-speed machines, such as boot and shoe machinery, comprises means whereby (1) when the treadle or the like is depressed the driving clutch is put into gear, (2) when the treadle is raised the clutch is put out of gear and a brake applied at a predetermined position which the machine slightly overrnns, and (3) when the treadle is agam depressed the machine is thereby rotated back to the predetermined point. Moreover, when the treadle is depressed beyond the position required for starting, the machine is declutched without being braked. Operation (3) above may be effected by an additional treadle. A double cone 4, Fig. 1, rotated by the machine shaft 2 acts as a clutch against a loose pulley 5, and as a brake against a surface 6, and is actuated by the engagement of a cam 10 on a shoulder 8 of the shaft 2 with a roller 12, which is mounted eccentrically on a shaft 11. carrying a spring-controlled rocker 13. This rocker engages a disk 26, Fig. 3, notched at 26<a> and connected by a link 28 to a slide 22<a> mounted adjacent to two other slides 22, 20. The slide 22 carries a disk 24 formed with a slot 24<a>, which is connected by a link 25 to the treadle rod 21 between which and the slide 22 is a spring 23 tending to keep the slide against a stop 23". The disk 24 is formed with a projection 24<b> adapted to engage shoulders 24<c>, 24<d>, formed in the slides 22<a>, 20 respectively. The slide 20 is provided with a rack engaging a sector 19, Fig. 2, on a lever 18 actuating a rod 15, which is connected to the brake member 6, and slides in a passage 15<a> against an adjustable stop 16. When the treadle is depressed to start the machine, the disk 24 is rotated to bring the projection 24<b> against the shoulder 24<c>, and then the slides 22, 22" are moved downwards, thereby rotating the disk 26 and allowing the rocker 13 to enter the notch 26<a>, wherenpon the clutch is put into gear by springs 7, Fig. 1. When the treadle is raised, the slides 22, 22<a> ascend and operate the rocker 13 to bring the roller 12 into the path of the cam 10, whereby the cone 4 is moved against the brake 6, which rotates slightly in the part 6<a> until the rod 15 reaches the stop 16. When the treadle is fully raised, the projection 24<b> comes against the shoulder 24<d> and the inclination of the slot 24<a> is reversed, so that when the treadle is again depressed, the link 25 moves down to the other end of the slot 24<a> and then rotates the disk to move the slide 20 downwards, thereby bringing the member 6 and machine back to the predetermined position. Depression of the treadle, after it has been again raised, then actuates the apparatus as before for starting. In order to declutch the machine without braking when the treadle is depressed beyond the position required for starting, the shaft 27, Fig. 1, of the disk 26 is provided with an eccentrically - mounted roller 30 engaging a second shoulder 9 on the shaft 2, or the shaft 11 of the rocker 13 may be used for this purpose. A rod 29, Fig. 3, connected to the disk 26 may operate a lever controlling one of the tension disks or the tension screw so that when the machine is stopped by raising the treadle, the tension on the thread is released. The return movement of the brake member by the raising of the treadle may also be used to release the loop from the needle of a boot-sewing machine.
