Magneto-electric machines. - In a generator for automobiles in which current is taken from a rotary armature for illumination and for exciting the low-tension winding of a stationary ignition transformer, the armature is mounted between the upwardly - pointing. poles of the magnets, the arch of which contains the driving- shaft, so that the armature may be mounted on a separate shaft having a higher speed than that of the driving-shaft. The machine is used in combination with a device for closing the battery - charging circuit at a limiting speed. With the circuits arranged as in Fig. 1, the armature a supplies current to the low-tension winding g of the transformer through an interrupter h. At a limiting speed, the centrifugallyoperated switch l closes a circuit at l<1>, l<2> to the lamps n and battery m. By placing the switch d<1> at d<2>, the ignition current may be taken from the battery. The armature a, Fig. 2, is gear-driven from a shaft i which is mounted in the arch of the magnets and carries the cam i<1> of the ignition interrupter h. It also drives the distributer j<2> through a gear j<3>. The wheel i<4> is recessed to receive the driving-member, and, together with the gears i<3>, a<3>, is enclosed by a cover r having a cylindrical packing r<1> which enables a lubricant to be used in the gear box. The transformer g, g<1> and condenser k are mounted between the armature and the shaft i. The centrifugally-operated switch consists of two coned disks o<2>, o<3>, the former of which is fixed on the armature shaft a<1>, while the latter can move axially under the action of balls o<5> and bears on a fixed piece a<4> sliding in a slot in the shaft against the action of a spring a<7>. Bearing on the piece a<4> is a rod o<1>, which passes freely through the shaft and holds the springy switch arm open until the speed of the machine is sufficient to cause the disk o<3> and member a<4> to move inwards.
