Carbonizing proccsses. -In the treatment of nitrogenous waste, sewage sludge, &c., the material after being dried in hot-air chambers is charged by apparatus 13<a> into horizontal retorts 15 and thence to inclined retorts 28, steam or other hot gas being sprayed on to the material in the retorts 15 from perforated pipes. The drying chambers and the horizontal retorts 15 are heated by a low - temperatnre furnace, and the inclined retorts by a high-temperature furnace. Gases are drawn off from the drying- chamhers and from the retorts 15, 28, and the residue from the retorts 28 is cooled by water sprays 37, and is carried away by a conveyer 39 to a crushing-mill 41.
