Photomechanical printing-surfaces. - In the preparation of lithographic printing-surfaces, in order to produce a grain in the opaque parts of the negative, the negative is dusted before exposure with a fusible substance, such as asphalt, and is heated to fix the dusting in the form of opaque grains. These operations are repeated until a suitable thickness of powder is obtained. After the negative is exposed and before or after development, the granular material is removed bv washing with naphtha or benzine. After drying, the negative is again dusted and grained in a similar way and several times if necessary, before using it to print the photo-lithographic surface. The first dusting and graining may alternatively be applied to a separate carrier, which is brought into contact with the negative for exposure.
