Abstract

20,891. Green, F. M. Sept. 16. Planes, construction of.-The hinge in the spar of a warpable plane of an aeroplane is arranged at the point of the spar where the bending-moment would be zero if the spar were not hinged. The maximum bending-moment on the spar is thereby reduced. In the diagram the bending-moment if the spar were not hinged is shown by the dotted line, and the hinges are arranged at the zero points E, F. The chain line shows the bending-moment if the spars were hinged at G, H, the maximum bending-moment being greater than when the hinges are at E, F. In planes which are not warped, hinges may be arranged in the spars at the points of zero bending-moment in order to avoid excessive stresses due to faulty alinement of the rigging.
