Abstract

20,747. Keithley, H. R. Sept. 15. Moulds; castings.-Car wheels having hard steel rims and soft steel bodies are made by casting the metals in turn in a mould 1, Fig. 1, and then forging the blank to shape without reheating. The mould 1 is filled to the line 7 with high-carbon steel or steel alloyed with manganese, chromium, vanadium, or nickel, &c., and then to the top of the gate 6 with low-carbon steel. The metal in the gate 6 contains the pipe &c. and is cut off.
