Abstract

20,424. Manes, L., [Esnouf, A.]. Sept. 10. [Cognate, Application, 5819/14.] Slide-rules. - A rule for calculating the factors of safety, crippling-stresses, and safe loads for struts, columns, stanchions, &c. according to any of the usually accepted formulµ may have the usual rectangular, or a cylindrical, or disk form. In the rectangular form, the rule comprises a base a, Fig. 1, having scales g, h of length and crosssectional area, respectively, a recess or groove for the slide containing further scales n, for the factor of safety, and m and a slide b, Fig. 2, bearing scales i, j, k, l, for the least transverse dimension of the strut, least radius of gyration, the crippling-stress, and safe load in tons, respectively. The rule also comprises a cursor c, fixed celluloid bridges d, e, and a reference mark p. A simpler form of sliderule for calculating crippling-stresses and factors of safety only, having a rectangular shape, is shown in Fig. 4. In this form the base a bears scales g, n (in the groove f) for the length of the strut &c., and factors of safety, while the slide b is graduated for scales i, j of least transverse dimension and radius of gyration, and a scale k which co-operates with a fixed index q to show tons per square inch.
